Mention the term "Pit Bull" and a lively debate may soon follow. Pit bulls are a type of dog that includes a number of breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Terriers and any dogs made of or looking like these breeds.
These athletic dogs have been much maligned in recent years because of their prevalence in dog-fighting arenas and some highly publicized biting incidents. Some jurisdictions have instituted breed-specific legislation with the intent of limiting pit bull ownership and reducing biting incidents and dog-fighting.
Myths about pit bulls have been propagated by media, politicians, and the public in addition to "experts" on dogs. These myths in addition to unscrupulous breeding have helped tarnish the reputation of a type of dog that can make wonderful pets that are calm, peaceful and stable. Pit bulls are enthusiastic, determined, and energetic and show a decided love of life that their trademark smile illustrates.
